FELINE SERVICES

Cats have special needs as a result of their unique social, behavioral, and metabolic constitution. Whether you have purebred show cats, or a domestic shorthair that showed up on your porch last winter, we welcome the opportunity to help them be healthy, comfortable, wonderful companions.

WELLNESS AND VACCINATIONS

Feline vaccinations help to protect our loved ones from many diseases common in the unvaccinated, rescue, and outdoor feline populations. A cat’s vaccination requirements will vary depending on his/her lifestyle- an indoor patient’s needs are significantly different from those of a free-roaming barn cat. We follow AAFP guidelines for feline vaccinations, and we endeavor to fit a patient’s immunization schedule to his or her needs.

The physical examination determines whether a patient is a good candidate for vaccinations. Furthermore, the annual or biannual office visit is our opportunity to find small problems before they become big ones. Our feline patients can be frustratingly adept at hiding signs of pain or illness. Weight loss or gain, heart murmurs, or other changes detected by you or your veterinarian can be important, early indicators of disease processes. Many diseases are more easily and effectively treated if they are treated early. Blood, urine, and fecal testing in addition to the exam can help to give a complete picture of your cat’s health.

INTERNAL MEDICINE

We can provide a broad spectrum of diagnostic procedures to help find the cause of illness in your patient. We offer in-house diagnostic tests forblood glucose, kidney and bladder health, blood gas, and electrolyte abnormalities. Fast in-house testing is also available for feline leukemia virus, feline immunodeficiency virus, and feline heartworm disease. We use reference laboratories for more extensive testing, and usually have results the next morning. If imaging is necessary, we offer digital radiography (X-rays) and abdominal ultrasound. Board-certified radiologists may be consulted if needed, and in critical cases we can have results within minutes. If special diagnostic procedures are required, we can refer you to local specialists in veterinary internal medicine, cardiology, neurology, ophthalmology, dermatology, or critical care. We maintain a well-stocked pharmacy for most commonly prescribed veterinary medications. We also provide medications formulated to be easily administered to your cat- flavored oral solutions and transdermal medications can help make treatment much less frustrating.

SURGERY

It can be frightening and stressful to know that your patient needs surgery. While any surgical procedure bears a level of risk, it can be reassuring to know your patient’s procedure is performed by your own doctor in an environment with which you are comfortable. Surgeries are performed Monday through Friday, by Drs. Griffiths and Tuck. We routinely perform reproductive surgeries such as ovariohysterectomy (spay), orchiectomy (neuter), and C-section. Cats sometimes require special surgeries of the colon or urinary tract due to their particular patterns of pathology. We have removed many gastric and small intestinal foreign bodies. We remove tumors of the skin, soft tissues, and abdomen. We remove bladder stones, repair lacerations, and perform surgical biopsies. We drain and debride abscesses and treat bite wounds. We also offer orthopedic surgeries such as some fracture repairs. Cats can have amazing recoveries, and be excellent surgery patients.

DENTAL CARE

Periodontal disease is the most common infectious process we see in dogs and cats. Routine veterinary dental care is very important to the health of any cat, and certain individuals have gingival or dental pathologies that require much more frequent and aggressive care. We offer anesthesia dentistry includingscaling and polishing, simple and surgical tooth extraction, and dental radiology. As with many health concerns, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”, and we are strong proponents of tooth brushing and other preventive dental care.
