CANINE SERVICES

WELLNESS AND VACCINATIONS

Vaccinations help to protect our loved ones from some of the most common diseases we see and treat. As our lives and habits change, our dogs travel, encounter new environments, and are exposed to other patients more than ever before. A patient’s vaccination requirements will vary depending on his/her lifestyle, so while we follow AAHA guidelines for canine vaccinations, we endeavor to fit a patient’s immunization schedule to his or her needs.

The physical examination determines whether a patient is a good candidate for vaccinations. Furthermore, the annual or biannual office visit is our opportunity to find small problems before they become big ones. Weight loss or gain, heart murmurs, or other changes detected by you or your veterinarian can be important, early indicators of disease processes in dogs and cats. Many diseases are more easily and effectively treated if they are treated early. Blood, urine, and fecal testing in addition to the exam can help to give a complete picture of your patient’s health.

INTERNAL MEDICINE

We can provide a broad spectrum of diagnostic procedures to help find the cause of illness in your patient. We offer in-house diagnostic tests for blood glucose, kidney and bladder health, intestinal parasitism, blood gas, and electrolyte abnormalities. Fast in-house testing is available for heartworm disease, tick-borne diseases, parvoviral enteritis, and Giardia. We use reference laboratories for more extensive testing, and usually have results the next morning. If imaging is necessary, we offer digital radiography (X-rays) and abdominal ultrasound. Board-certified radiologists may be consulted if needed, and in critical cases we can have results within minutes. If special diagnostic procedures are required, we can refer you to local specialists in veterinary internal medicine, cardiology, neurology, ophthalmology, dermatology, or critical care. We maintain a well-stocked pharmacy for most commonly prescribed veterinary medications.

SURGERY

It can be frightening and stressful to know that your patient needs surgery. While any surgical procedure bears a level of risk, it can be reassuring to know your patient’s procedure is performed by your own doctor in an environment with which you are comfortable. Surgeries are performed Monday through Friday, by Drs. Griffiths and Tuck. We routinely perform reproductive surgeries such as ovariohysterectomy (spay), orchiectomy (neuter), and C-section. We have removed many gastric and small intestinal foreign bodies. We remove tumors of the skin, soft tissues, and abdomen. We correct congenital and genetic abnormalities of the eyelids and nasal passages. We remove bladder stones, repair lacerations, and perform surgical biopsies. We also offer orthopedic surgeries such as cruciate ligament stabilization (ACL,CCL).

DENTAL CARE

Periodontal disease is the most common infectious process we see in dogs and cats. Routine veterinary dental care is very important to the health of any canine, and certain breeds can have much greater dental demands. We offer anesthesia dentistry including scaling and polishing, simple and surgical tooth extraction, and dental radiology. As with many health concerns, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”, and we are strong proponents of tooth brushing and other preventive dental care.
